  4. Do not confuse resign and retire. If someone resigns from their job, they leave it after saying that they do not want to do it any more. You can resign from your job at any age, and perhaps start another job soon afterwards. When someone retires, they leave their job and stop working, often because they have reached the age when they can get a pension. When professional sportsmen and women stop playing sport as their job, you can also say that they retire, even if they are fairly young.
